Overall score:

I scored this book 5/5

Short Summary of the book:

This is another great book by this author. The way it brings Michael Daniels is brought back to life in this spin-off of Cruel Summer is nearly eery. The author has cleverly evoked Michael’s spirit in this book.

Where Cruel Summer told the story of skateboarding loving Michael emotionally, this collection of poems shows us Michael’s inner thoughts. I highly recommend this book but suggest Cruel Summer is read first.

What I liked about the book:

Bernard Jan has a great style of writing and I couldn’t put the book down.

What I didn’t like about the book:

I really loved the book. Even the dark nature of the poems did not distract from the great story. Indeed, they were an integral part of it.

My favourite bits in the book:

The way the poems made me feel like having a front seat to Michael’s inner thoughts.

My least favourite bits in the book:

There were none.

Any further books in the series? Any more planned by this author?

This author has written a few other books, which are also very much worth a read. I enjoyed them all.

What books could this be compared to and why?

This is a great book unlike any other I’ve read. It is the perfect follow-up to Cruel Summer.

Recommendation:

In summary, I would recommend this book for the following readers:

Children

No

Young Adult

Adult

If you like your books dark, but full of hope for the future, this collection of poems may be the book for you. I recommend you read Cruel Summer first.

I’m certainly looking forward to reading more by this author.

Book Description by Author:

His life has been a cocktail of melancholy, sorrow, and desire. When a skateboarder dips his pen into poetry, what will his passion create?

After a lifetime of abuse and the tragic loss of his mother, NYC teen Michael Daniels needed an outlet. Despite his cheerful nature, his inner mind was teeming with the stark contrast of darkness and light. So, in this volume full of imagery and symbolism, his underground rhymes reflect days full of extreme sports, failed relationships, and nostalgic memories.

Written by Bernard Jan in character as the hero from his novel Cruel Summer, this channeled view of the world is an extravaganza of extremes. And in its groundbreaking perspectives, you’ll discover the cries of a heart longing to be understood.

Buy this book of poetry and feel Michael’s passion through these unusual literary postcards.

A World Without Color is a true story of the last three days he spent with his cat, while Look for Me Under the Rainbow in a unique and gentle way sheds light on the plight of harp seal pups in Canada. It warms the heart of all readers concerned about our planet and its treasures. January River is a heartwarming cross-genre novel about five friends, one dog, and one river carrying a secret. Cruel Summer is a gripping young adult cross-genre novel about an abused teenager from New Manhattan who only wants to skate, but they have other plans for him.

His first two books were written at the beginning of the war in Croatia in 1991 amidst air alerts and illusory attempts when he wanted to believe and think that life is normal, that everything is all right with the world. He has published five novels, two novellas, and one book of poems in Croatian. Four of his books, including the book of poems, were translated into English.

His passion for music and entertainment resulted in his becoming a partner of Tom's Music Place, which was established in 2009 by his friend Thomas Carley Jr., whose objective was to raise the respect of music.

His desire to help others came to the fore during his years advocating environmental protection and advocacy of animal rights. He did volunteering work for the refugees, because suffering does not know any borders. When it comes within your reach in your home, you simply have to do something. As part of his animal advocacy activities, it has been a great honor and pleasure to translate "Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust" by Charles Patterson into Croatian.

Book Description by Author:

My name is Nicole Marie Anderson. I was born in Fernie, British Columbia, Canada. My life has been quite the roller coaster ride. The best part of my childhood was my sister, Chloe. She made it better in many ways. We had a seventeen year difference, so she mostly took care of me. My parents weren't what you'd call loving. They provided well for us, but they never made us feel understood. Definitely didn't bother in supporting our hopes and dreams.

Chloe wanted to be a chef, but our parents just thought it was a waste of time. As I got older, I wanted to be a writer/English school teacher. Yep, they didn't like that choice either. They thought wanting to be a writer was a pipe dream going no where.

Our parents were more interested in their lives than ours. They worked hard to save money to be able to retire as young as possible. All their extra money went into their retirement fund. They didn't feel the need to save up to help pay for an education for either of us, since they didn’t agree with what we wanted to study.

I remember being more sad than happy growing up. All my happy memories were of my sister. Then when she married, I thought I was going to be all alone. Her husband, Jayden, made me feel welcome in their home anytime I wanted.

I didn't have many friends and had a zero interest in dating anyone. Until I met Chase Williams on my seventeenth birthday at a mutual party, we were both invited to. Looking back, it was love at first sight. Even though at the time my mind was pushing the happily ever after theory out the window. My heart was trying hard to open up, but the idea of having my heart broken scared me.

Chloe and Jayden had a rock hard solid marriage. They loved and respected each other. Jayden worked his ass off to provide for her and the twins they had a year and a half after their wedding. Lily and Logan were kind, loving, adorable kids. It showed they were being raised well.

I never imagined that my life would be filled with considerable amounts of love, lies and loss. Being heartbroken seemed never-ending from a young age. The bombshell hit eight months after my seventeenth birthday. I couldn't believe what was happening and certainly didn't know what the hell to do with all this information.

*This is a fiction novel with strong language, sexual content and tragic scenes.

Update on "Wake-Up Call"

Yes, I'm still writing and editing too. I don't have a lot of free time, but I haven't yet given up on this hobby of mine.

So, today, I set aside a little time to edit Wake-Up Call. Warning! It's only the first edit and it is not yet fully polished. I'm slowly nearing the end of the book with the first edit (still several chapters away from it, but the end is in sight).

It feels like it has been ages since I last published a book and it's about time something new was added onto my published books list.

And now it's time to share with you an excerpt from the book. I hope you like it.

Mum got up and walked to Alicia, hugging her, “Stay strong sweetie, those beautiful kids of yours need you. I’ve got your back. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.” Mum hugged Alicia tighter, tears still glistening her eyes and then let go while dad was shooting daggers at Alicia.

“Let’s go Liz, I’ve heard and seen quite enough. Where is your loyalty, woman? After all the things she did to our boy. Can’t you see Alicia drove Daryll to it? All this is her fault and hers alone.” Next Dad strutted to the front door, his steps echoing on the tiles in the hallway, held it open for mum to step through, then shot another death glare at Alicia and slammed the door behind him.

Well, good riddance to bad rubbish. How dare dad behave like that to my beautiful wife? Certainly she did not deserve that? Had Alicia done anything to upset me to such a degree I would take my own life? No, no matter what dad had said, there did not seem to be any truth in it. There was no way I would consider those words as truth. Dad’s words were poison.

Alicia shuffled back to the couch in a daze and slumped back onto it. Leaning forward, her head in her hands, tears flowed freely down her face. “Daryll, I miss you so much. Why did you have to leave us? What did I do which was so terrible you had to take your own life? Will I ever find out what was in your mind when you took that overdose? Why did I not see the agony you must have been going through? You should have talked to me; nothing could have been that bad.”

How could I leave Alicia in agony and full of despair? This was all my doing and had nothing to do with what Alicia did or didn’t do. What had I been thinking? Drugs? An overdose? Alicia was right; nothing would be bad enough for me to want to leave the ones I loved; my wife, my kids, my parents, my best friend, or even my business. Why had I done that? And why could I still not remember taking an overdose, or the reason for it?

Only one thing was important now; I had to comfort the woman I loved. As I sat next to her on the couch, I wrapped my arm around her and pulled her close. Alicia came willingly but did not appear to notice. My free hand stroked her arm and I could not resist grabbing her chin and pulling her face closer, and kissing her gently on the lips, “I’m so very sorry, sweetheart. Dad should not say that; he has no right, and he is so very wrong. Nothing you did would ever make me take my own life, nothing. Come here, we can do this, you can do this. And I’ll be there for you every step of the way. I love you so incredibly much and I’m so proud of you.”

Again, I kissed Alicia on the lips. This time, her hand moved to her lips and lingered there, a question forming on her face. “Daryll? No, it can’t be. Oh, look at me, now I’m starting to hallucinate, too. It must be the grief and the shock of Joseph’s hatred. But I don’t deserve that. Certainly Daryll did not take his own life because of something I did or didn’t do? No, Daryll would have talked to me about it first if something upset him that much he no longer wanted to be here. And why would Joseph even think Euan would have an affair with me? No, that’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Alicia stared into space for a while, “Hmm, maybe that thought is not so ridiculous after all.”

My heart jumped in my chest.

“Perhaps Joseph had a bit of point after all.”

Now my heart appeared to stop. Was it possible for my heart to stop when I was already dead?

“Euan has been behaving strangely these last few days, like he wants to step into Daryll’s shoes. No, that can’t be true. And there is no way I would fall into his arms. Certainly not so quickly after losing the only man I ever loved. Well, except for my dad, of course. No, if Euan thinks I will simply swap from Daryll to him within days of Daryll’s death, he has another thing coming. No matter how supportive he has been, I’m not interested in a relationship with Euan.”

A sigh escaped, and I pulled Alicia closer, hugging her and kissing her all over her hair, face and lips.

Again Alicia looked a little confused and thoughtful, then shook her head.

Love,

Joni

I was born in Hounslow, Middlesex in the south of England. As a child, I loved drawing and took private art classes with a wonderful teacher called, Pearl Lee. When I was nine, my mum took me on holiday to Majorca. I clearly remember being fascinated by how other people lived outside of England. Travelling became my new obsession.

After Sixth Form College, I intended to go to art school, but...

If you like to find out more about Asperger’s and autism, this book may be the book for you.

Book Description by Author:

Matthew Kenslow was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, which is within the autistic spectrum, when he was six years old. He shares its common symptoms, such as lacking social and conversational skills, and having poor eye contact with others. In school he had difficulty with certain subjects, but others (like math and science) came easily to him. He has the ability to remember a myriad of facts and the events in his life--some he would rather forget!

Juggling the Issues: Living With Asperger's Syndrome is a collection of short stories from his life. He describes many of the issues that those with autism and Asperger's face each day. He also talks about some of the positive aspects of having Asperger's as well. What is life like living with Asperger's? Matthew describes it as having "an enhancer" plugged into his brain, which accelerates his thoughts and even his emotions. "Asperger's will deepen everything's significance, causing us to take things to a more intense level," he confides.

If you want to better understand those living with Asperger's, you need to read this book. The insights Kenslow shares come from his deep experience of living with it and making the most of life's opportunities.

About the Author:

MATTHEW KENSLOW has grown up with a form of Autism known as “Asperger’s Syndrome.” Life has been an adventure as he pieced together all of his surroundings amid both praises and teases. His mission is to teach others from a firsthand perspective of how autistic people interprets things differently than the rest of the world.

He believes God has blessed him with the gifts to juggle, playing piano, and recalling facts about the American presidents, geography, science, and mathematics. He goes to juggle at elementary schools and encourages the children there to never give up on their passions.

He has earned the Gold Medal of Achievement (which is equivalent to the rank of Eagle Scout) through Royal Rangers, a program he has been in since he was five. Now, he is giving back to children and teenagers who are at the ages he once was – teaching and mentoring them in a wide set of skills and knowledge.

He graduated Orange Coast College with an Associate of Science degree in Chemistry and is pursuing Vanguard University of Southern California. He currently aspires to be a middle school math and science teacher.
