Short Summary of the book:

Meet Rowan Ashby, a young woman who loves the outdoors and her spaniel Bracken. She saved Bracken when some kids terrorised the young pup, leading to an injury to her leg, which eventually led to her losing her leg. This has never stopped Rowan, though. Enter Elliot, who seems like a nice guy, until he turns her down because she is an amputee. Broken-hearted, she is done with men and longs to get in her van and sit beside a lake at sunset with Bracken.

When Bracken meets another dog at a traffic light, things take another turn, and a friendship with its owner develops. But what will happen when Elliot returns on the scene?

What I liked about the book:

The great story telling by the author with descriptions of the Lake District scenery. She knows how to set a scene and keep the reader invested in the story.

What I didn’t like about the book:

I enjoyed the book in its entirety.

My favourite bits in the book:

I loved the entire book.

My least favourite bits in the book:

Elliot’s hypocrisy.

Any further books in the series? Any more planned by this author?

This is a stand-alone book by the author, but is included in a box set called Westmorland Tales which also includes The Last Session and Under Iron Skies. Both are also stand-alones set in the Lake District.

What books could this be compared to and why?

This is a contemporary romance mixed with suspense.

Book Description by Author:

Some days begin with a broken heart. Others begin with a dog.

Rowan Ashby has had her fair share of troubles. She loves living near the lakes and fells of Cumbria. Between camping under the stars and outdoorsy adventures, she has everything she needs—including Bracken, her daft spaniel, and her camper van.

When Bracken befriends a dog at a set of traffic lights, Rowan crosses paths with Joe Carrick, a man whose smile stays with her long after the lights change. But old wounds have a way of reopening, and a man from the past refuses to stay there.

Elliot Graves isn’t done with Rowan, despite what she wants. Between him and Joe, all she needs is to get in the van with Bracken and sit beside a lake at sunset. However, Bracken takes matters out of her hands. What’s a girl to do? He’s never been wrong before.

Set against the magnificent scenery of the Lake District, Where Bracken Leads is a touching story of the extraordinary bond between a woman and her dog, and learning to trust again.

Sometimes the longest journey isn't across mountains or rivers. It's learning to let someone walk beside you.
