Since beginning a comprehensive writing course with The Writers Bureau in 2001, my articles and short stories have been published in a variety of magazines. These include Heritage, Scottish Field, The Lady and People’s Friend. In 2005 a couple of my short stories were included in two quite different anthologies. The first story was in an International Anthology, published in June, while the second appeared in Café Ole – Too Hot To Handle, which was launched in Glasgow during August.

My debut novel, The Trojan Project, an action thriller, was published at the end of May 2008 by Austin & Macauley Publishers Ltd. Now my novel is to be re-published in the USA later this year with a brand new cover. Short Summary of the book:

Having been replaced by a younger version by her plastic surgeon husband, Magali needs to reinvent herself following a divorce. Her daughter-in-law suggests she embarks on two careers, one of counsellor and one as private detective. Magali soon finds out these titles are protected and she requires training for them. But not before her first case as private detective comes around. Not just a simple case of following an adulterous spouse but an actual murder case.

What I liked about the book:

The fact the heroine of the story was a middle-aged divorcee who embarks on this road accidentally while trying to find herself again.

What I didn’t like about the book:

I enjoyed the entire book.

My favourite bits in the book:

There were many lovely bits in the book, some suspense, some humour and some real human emotion.

My least favourite bits in the book:

I liked the entire book, there were some problems with the grammar at times.

Yes, I understand this is only the first in the series, one which is available free.

What books could this be compared to and why?

Some of the book reminds us of the clueless Inspector Clousseau, however, this book is difficult to compare to any book in particular.

I grew up in Wales, was educated in England and have spent most of my life in France. I've been writing since the age of 10, when my first poem was sent to a competition by my English teacher. After moving to France, I ran a café-theatre till it got demolished, whereupon I scratched my head, wondering what to do next. Eventually I became a university lecturer, specialising in Second Language Acquisition, even though (apart, obviously, from French) I've spectacularly failed to learn any languages (I'm currently trying Dutch and can already say 'The turtle eats the sandwich', which is very encouraging). I spent two years in Mayotte, a tiny, unknown island in the Indian Ocean, which France bought for 1000 piastres in 1842. Magali Rousseau (my heroine) got into a lot of trouble there, but now, like me, she's back in Provence, where she jogs, paints, and catches murderers. I am a seventy year old writer of genre fiction. And yes, my portrait was used in 1931 for the original design of Boris Karloff's Frankenstein (well, maybe I'm stretching the truth just an itsy-bitsy bit).

This book is the prequel to the other (currently) two books in the series. As such it gives an insight in how the time demons came into existence and how the main character in the other books could possibly exist. The book shows the story of two friends and disciples who expect to receive a wish from Trikaal. While one tries to use his gift for the good of others, the other only wishes to use it for his own betterment.

What I liked about the book:

I liked the background and foundation this book gave to the other two books in the series.

What I didn’t like about the book:

This book did not flow as well as the other two and, therefore, received 4 stars instead of 5.

My favourite bits in the book:

I liked how Aru continued to try his best for others despite the betrayal of his friend Nemi. I also liked how he was able to keep an eye on his family while being a captive himself.

My least favourite bits in the book:

I did not like how Nemi betrayed his friend in the hope to delay the time of his ultimate death for as long as possible.

What I liked about the book:

I loved the way Sage overcame the trauma of being bullied. From a shy girl, she turns into a confident young woman.

There wasn’t anything I did not like about the book.

Where Sage gets the better of the bullies without turning into a bully herself and without being nasty.

My least favourite bits in the book:

The book in its entirety was good.

It reminded me of another book I had read about parallel worlds, the title and author escape me at the moment, however, in this book Sage turns into a hero and the other book I read had a different lookout.

Yes, there is. Finally!

We had our 5-yearly inspection visit yesterday and things went very well. We hope to get a very good rating on the basis of the visit and I'm so very proud of the team I now call 'my team'.

I've only officially been part of the management since January and the team has simply come so far in a short time. They are amazing!

After 2 weeks of very hard work getting the visit prepared, there should now be a somewhat quieter period ahead. This morning I even had time to do a little editing of the nearly completed book.

Yes! It's nearly completed. Another chapter has been edited and I had a quick look. Three more chapters left to edit.



Although it may be nearly a year since I started 'Diary of a Female GP' as my NaNoWriMo project, it's nearly ready now. Three more chapters to go, then a little work on formatting (exporting it to Word from yWriter 6 first) and then it will be ready for the beta-readers.

I have so far received interest from 4 people. If you are interested too, let me know. I'll be grateful for any help people can offer to make this book the best it can be. Who knows, I might even get it ready for publication by Christmas! Wouldn't that just be a great time for launching a new book?

At ten to nine, I call in Dr K’s third patient. My third patient has also arrived, but slightly later and with the double workload I have decided to see the patients on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Seventy-three-year-old Mabel is not impressed to see me, “I thought my appointment was with Dr K today. If I had known it was with you instead, I would have rearranged the appointment.”

Okay then, it is absolutely in her right to do so, “I’m really sorry about that. Dr K has called in sick this morning. If you wish, we can re-book your appointment with Dr K.”

“No, no, I’m here now. Better get it over and done with,” Mabel huffs. “My right knee has been playing up lately and I want something done about that. The painkillers are no longer doing anything for me.”

Mabel is known with osteoarthritis (ageing of the joint) and is currently on co-codamol 8/500 (this is a combination of 8 mg codeine and 500 mg paracetamol). Although Mabel takes two tablets of this four times a day, her pain is not sufficiently under control, and she would like something stronger for the pain. “Would you like to try co-codamol 30/500 instead? This is a little stronger than you are taking at the moment. Instead of 8 mg, it has 30 mg codeine in it.”

Mabel’s expression softens, and she no longer appears as displeased as she was when she first entered my room. The medication can, however, cause more constipation and drowsiness than the lower version does and I advise her of this. After I also advise her not to drive if any drowsiness occurs and to return if she has problems tolerating the medication or the pain does not respond to the stronger dose, she leaves.

Life is busy

Recent weeks have gone by quickly. With hardly any time to spare, life appears to continue from day to day with no more than work. Getting up early in the morning to get lunch ready for the family, then go to work shortly after. On return from work, it's time to get tea ready for the family and then it's time for bed once more.
Hopefully, it won't be much longer before I have a chance to get back to writing. For now, work needs to come first.
In the near future, it's time for our 5-yearly inspection at work. Time to prepare everything in as far as possible.
And then, maybe I'll be able to take a little bit of time off. Have a bit of time to do what I enjoy, writing my books. They are desperate for some attention and I would like to see at least one of them published by the end of the year.
However, it's already the middle of September. Time is passing quickly and I may not be able to get my wish.
I have not given up. I will continue writing my books. Unfortunately, it needs to be at a slower pace than it was before I returned to work. Instead of writing one book every one, two or three months, I now need to be content with writing one a year perhaps.

So, now you know why I have not been around that much, life is busy. Family, work and housework interfere. But, I will not give up and I will not stop writing.

What I liked about the book:

I loved seeing this brave young man return in this book. His love and self-sacrifice are inspirational.

What I didn’t like about the book:

I was sorry to see the sacrifices Tej had to make to make the world safe once more.

My favourite bits in the book:

The small victories for Tej were my favourite.

My least favourite bits in the book:

I hated how Tej had to lose so many of his loved ones and friends to help saving the world.

In this, the latest iteration of Joni Martins' story of a group of friends and siblings, who find themselves falling in love, within their group, we focus on Theo and Krista's relationship. Just as their friendship was beginning to bloom into love, Theo's sister, Josie and one of his best friend's Ronald put the kybosh on their developing love affair by convincing Theo, a mechanic, that he was not good enough for the beautiful, talented and smart, Krista. Wracked by self-doubt Theo has broken off the relationship and begins to sink into as morass of pain, angst and depression. Similarly Krista is devastated to lose the man she believed was going to be the ""love of her life"" and she begins also to spiral downward.
All of the couple's friends, as well as Josie and Ronald, now realise their horrific error, but is it too late to convince Theo and Krista that they were wrong to interfere and that the two clearly love each other so much, as evidenced by their depression at being apart, that they were clearly meant to be together. Can Theo and Kristie find each other again and perhaps more importantly can Theo find his self-esteem and his confidence again, after Josie's cavalier treatment of his feelings?
Reminiscent in many ways of an episode of ""Friends"", I first became attracted to these characters in Martins' book ""Captive Love"" and Lost Love follows the same, emotional, twenty-something's as they try to settle into the real adult world and make their way in their chosen careers as well as forming relationships.
Martins' writing is straightforward and easy to read. The characters are likeable and easy to identify with, although, at times, I did feel like grabbing Theo and giving him a good, stern, talking to about not worrying about what others thought about him - only his opinion mattered. What I did like was the love scenes in the story, that were hot, passionate and exciting without crossing that fine line into crudity. Martins did an excellent job on that account.
All in all, another good addition to this series and I am keen to see where the next character relationship heads - presumably Josie and Ronald. A good read."
